Generally, Earnest cannot directly transfer a student loan from one person to another, nor can you refinance someone else's loan. This includes:
- Moving a loan from a parent to a child, or from a child to a parent
- Moving a loan from one spouse to another
However, if you are already a cosigner on a student loan, you can apply to refinance that loan entirely into your own name. Doing this removes the original primary borrower and makes you the sole owner of the loan. To qualify for this option, you must meet the following requirements:
- Cosigner Verification: You must be the current cosigner on the loan. We will verify this by checking the existing loan details during the application process.
- Standard Eligibility: You must meet all of our standard underwriting requirements. (Review our full Eligibility Guide for details.)
Once approved and the loan is refinanced, the original primary borrower is permanently released from the debt. This process is irreversible, and you will assume full liability for the loan.
Are you a primary borrower looking to remove a cosigner? If you want to see if you qualify to refinance on your own, please review our Eligibility Guide.
