Nelnet: How to Find Your 10-Day Payoff Information

Account Information

Nelnet manages both its own loans and those owned by the Department of Education. If you have Nelnet-owned loans (Sloan Servicing), your account number will begin with D or J. Department of Education-owned loan account numbers begin with E. Payoffs for the different types of loans should go to different addresses, and you’ll need to click “Add new servicer” to list these as separate servicers.

Individual loans are distinguished by Groups. You’ll see “Group A,” “Group AE,” etc., listed on your billing statement as individual loans. If you’d like to pay off some but not all of your loans, you’ll need to request individual payoffs for your loans to pay off. It’s important to note that group letters are not the same as the letters on account numbers. You can have a Nelnet loan with an account number beginning with a D, E, or J, and within those account numbers, your loans will have individual Groups that can be any letter. You can learn more about your Nelnet statement here!

Billing Statement

If you are enrolled in paperless, you may download a copy of your billing statement by signing in to your Nelnet account and selecting “Inbox.” It’s important to note our upload section can only support JPG, PNG, or PDF file types. If you don’t have a copy of your statement to provide, we can also accept your “Mortgage Letter/Loan Summary” or a screenshot showing your loan details instead. Please make sure the upload includes as much of the following as possible: your full name, a recent date, account number, and payoff amount. If we need any clarification on the information provided, our team will contact you by email before sending the funds to Nelnet.

10-Day Payoff Amount

The "10-day Payoff Amount" is your current loan balance plus ten days of interest for the loan(s) you'd like to include at Nelnet. You may locate your 10-day payoff information online through your Nelnet dashboard by signing in to your account here and selecting a payoff date ten days from the current date.

You may also receive your 10-day payoff information by requesting a quote from Nelnet customer support. Keep in mind that the 10-day payoff amount assumes payoff in 10 days and, therefore, may lead to an overpayment or underpayment depending on when Nelnet applies the payment. Most overpayments will be refunded to Earnest and applied to your principal balance, but occasionally, they may be issued to you, allowing you to use the funds as you choose. For underpayments, however, you’ll be responsible for paying the remaining amount. If you have any other questions about your loan approval or need further assistance, please use the "Get In Touch” button at the bottom of this article.

Finally, these instructions may have been updated by Nelnet since this article was published. We encourage you to review their website for the most accurate payoff information.
